Wentworth’s instructions regarding

the recently arrived Jamaican Maroons

June 29th, 1797

The Maroons were received into this Province conformable to His Majesty’s commands, with instructions to me, for their comfortable support in all things, and to enable me thereto, I was directed to draw Bills on the Right Honorable the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty’s Treasury – totally and entirely independent of this Province, which will not be encumbered with any cost or charge for these people. The Government of the Island of Jamaica have also furnished a very considerable sum of money to be applied toward the settlement and maintenance of the Maroons – who have behaved orderly – peaceably and quietly since their arrival. It cannot but afford pleasure to every serious and humane mind, to be informed, that means of instruction and liberally provided for the children, and diligently exercised, with great success, as are also the most prudent means for instructing all of them in the Christian Religion whereto they pay a decent and interesting attention which affords great hopes of happy success.

I have not any papers or documents, which I have permission to communicate on this subject.
